3 Tips for Drivers to Avoid Bicyclists (And a Lawsuit)

share the road

On March 29, 2016, an Austin woman was hit by a truck while bicycling and dragged for nearly half a mile. The horrific incident has left the woman in critical care, and authorities have already captured the suspect. Although most incidents between cars and cyclists aren’t this gruesome, many bicyclists are injured by cars in the Austin area every day. Drivers, here is a list of safety tips to help you avoid bicyclists, and also avoid a lawsuit.

Three Feet of Space, Please

When driving, remember to keep three feet of space between your vehicle and any bicyclist. This means that you may have to slow down and wait for traffic in order to pass a bike rider with enough room between them and your car, but this is the best way to ensure you will not accidentally collide with a bicyclist.

Slow Down

Be sure to slow down around turns, driveways, and crosswalks. If you see a bicyclist nearing, don’t try to beat them around the corner. Instead, slow down and yield. Practicing this safety measure will help you avoid bicyclists and help keep them safe on Austin streets.

Remember, They’re Drivers Too

Although you may get frustrated by the presence of bicyclists, remember that they are considered vehicles by law and have to follow the rules of the road just the same way that you do. Harness that frustration and turn it into appreciation. Avoid practicing driving habits you wouldn’t want done to you by other drivers, like tailgating and swerving through traffic without signaling. Bicyclists are much more vulnerable than drivers, so remember they are just as frustrated by bad driving habits as you are.

Lawsuits Against Negligent Drivers Who Fail to Avoid Bicyclists

The rate at which bicyclists are getting injured has been increasing over the years. To help prevent this from happening, there needs to be cooperation between bicyclists and drivers. As a driver, it is important to do everything in your power to avoid bicyclists. Failing to do so could land you in a lawsuit for your negligence as a driver. If you do accidentally collide with a bicyclist, it is extremely important that you immediately stop and render aid.
